The basis of natural building is to lessen the environmental impact of buildings by using readily and locally available renewable, reused or recycled materials, such as mud bricks, in order to build beautiful buildings while minimising the use of materials with negative environmental or health impacts. By minimising materials with high embodied energy, avoiding toxic materials as much as possible, and designing buildings with minimal demands on energy and resources,  buildings will have less environmental impact and be healthier to work on or live in.

Appropriate technology means technology that is suited to time, place, culture and environment, using local materials to do useful work in ways that do the least possible harm, and this earth-centric philosophy underpins his approach.
